Here are some suggestions on how school food service staff can help children build to 5 A Day.

Here are some suggestions for helping children build to 5 A Day. 10

  • Give them choices.
  • Ask and serve the kinds of fruits and vegetables that they would likely eat.
  • Increase variety by combining a new fruit or vegetable with a familiar food;
    for example, pile veggies or fruit on a sandwich or pizza!
  • Be patient and know this process will take time, keeping in mind that children need to be offered a new food about 10 times before they readily eat it.11
  • Have table tents or posters in the cafeteria that will help students and teachers know what a serving size is.
