Help Make VERB™ Happen13
  • A lesson integrating language skills with physical activity includes implementing a skill taught in the language arts, while practicing movement skills during play or physical education classes.
  • Building on this concept, the Center for Disease Control has designed the Web site, Verb: It's what you do, targeting young teens to encourage physical activity by use of verbs.
  • For example, teens are given a new VERB of the Week - like "INVENT": Invent a new bike trick, a silly game, etc.
  • The Web site includes a VERB Newsletter, Most VERB-able Player Awards, and VERB Stars implementing their VERB- of-the-Week.
Link with Language or PE Curriculum
  • Advise the school faculty of this Web site.
  • Ask them to have their students in their English or PE classes to become VERB members.
  • Volunteer to showcase in the school cafeteria pictures of VERB Stars at your school implementing, along with a short paragraph describing their VERB-of-the-Week.
Motivational Signs14
  • Motivational SignsMotivational signs placed close to stairs or elevators have been found to be effective in increasing the percentage of people taking stairs. Results of this study can easily be transferred into a school setting
  • Children are also fascinated with the concept of time.
Link with Math & Art Curriculum
  • Ask your math teachers to introduce children to the use of stop watches and have them time each other in various physical activities. For examples, the time required for children in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades to: Artwork
    • Walk up two sets of stairs
    • Run around the playground
    • Jump rope 50 times, etc.
  • Have children draw pictures of themselves demonstrating each of these activities along with the time to complete them.
  • Designate the school cafeteria as the "drop-off" point for these drawings.
  • Coordinate with the teachers and students places they consider would have the most impact on encouraging other students to participate in these types of physical activities demonstrated in the student drawings.
